The United Kingdom, UK has confirmed that the presidential election results released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) are correct and authentic.
The United Kingdom’s Minister of State for Africa, Harriet Baldwin confirmed that the figures in the INEC results are in concord with the results obtained through the Civil Society Vote tabulation process.
In a statement, Baldwin said that the UK and other international observers believe that the presidential results are authentic. She said that the Nigerian people should have confidence in the result.
“Along with our international partners, the UK believes the Nigerian people can have confidence in the result,” Baldwin said.
The minister went ahead to congratulate President Muhammadu Buhari on his victory in the polls and for securing a second term. She hinted that the United Kingdom has been a strong friend and ally of Nigeria and that Nigeria’s progress will benefit Africa and the World.
“The UK is a long-standing friend and partner of Nigeria and the Nigerian people and a stable and prosperous Nigeria benefits Africa and the world,” The Minister said.
The minister applauded Nigerians for their resilient spirit and commitment to democracy. She noted the concerns expressed by some Nigerians in the conduct of the elections, the logistics and collation of results.
Reacting to the recent statement by the People’s Democratic Party’s candidate, Atiku Abubakar where he announced that he would challenge the results in court, minister Baldwin said that parties or individuals who wish to challenge the electoral process should do so peacefully and through the appropriate channel.
“We encourage Nigerian authorities to examine all allegations of wrongdoing carefully, and take the necessary action against individuals found responsible,” Baldwin said.
Finally, she condoled with families of those who lost their lives during the elections.
