Rivers State Deputy governorship candidate for the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Christopher Udume has defected to PDP to support the incumbent governor Nyesom Wike in the forthcoming Guber and state assembly elections.
Mr. Christopher Udume made this declaration at the State’s People’s Democratic Party campaign office in Port Harcourt on Thursday.
He defected with approximately 98 per cent of the State’s Social Democratic Party (SDP) executive committee which includes many local government party chairmen.
Mr. Udume said that the SDP executives decided to defect to PDP to help ensure Governor Wike’s re-election in order to continue the good works the governor has been doing.
Mr. Udume was quoted saying:
“On behalf of myself and supporters of the SDP, we wish to join the PDP. We are bold to say that you deserve to continue with your good works.
“We are here to say, re-elect Wike again. Your great works are there for all to see and we are therefore committed to ensuring that you get a second term.”
Other former SDP executives spoke at the defection meeting which was held at the PDP campaign office in Port Harcourt.
The state’s SDP publicity secretary, Mr. Inime Righteous said that the SDP defectors have come to PDP to be part of the success story of Governor Wike.
Governor Wike thanked the SDP defectors and stated that his re-election has been approved by God and the good people of Rivers State.
He said that with Udume’s defection, SDP will no longer have a governorship candidate in the elections on Saturday due to the constitutional requirements of a deputy-governorship candidate.
Governor Wike was quoted saying:
“God in his infinite mercies has given us victory. Nobody born of a woman can stop us from victory. It doesn’t matter the gunboats or armoured personnel carriers, God is with us.
“Anybody can plan against us, but you are planning against God. I cannot be afraid of any man because He who is with us, is greater than them.
“All the schemes against elections in Rivers State will fail because the state is PDP.”
In conclusion, Governor Wike thanked the former SDP executives again for their commitment to peaceful elections in the state. He also called on other party leaders to reject negative destructive tendencies and join in the development of the state.
