Richarlison apologies to Thiago after horrific tackle

Everton winger Richarlison has issued an apology to Liverpool ‘s Thiago Alcantara after his shocking tackle injured the Spaniard during Saturday’s dramatic Merseyside derby.

The Toffees came from behind on two occasions to salvage a draw against their cross-city rivals, but the game was marred by a number of aggressive challenges.

Jordan Pickford’s kick at Virgil van Dijk preceded Richarlison’s horror lunge, which earned the Brazilian international a late sending off.

He bulldozed into the Liverpool midfielder with his studs showing, leaving referee Michael Oliver no choice but to brandish his red card.

After the final whistle Richarlison took to his official website to publish an apology to Thiago, claiming that it was never his intention to cause any harm.

“Everyone that knows my background knows that I was never a violent player,” he wrote.

“What happened today was a fatality from sheer over-dedication.

“I did not enter that dispute with the intention of hurting Thiago. When I saw that the crash was going to happen, I picked up my foot and hit him with my knee in the pass, which was inevitable due to the speed of the play.”

Richarlison, who has scored four times in seven appearances for Everton this season, stated that he had also sent Thiago a personal message to wish him well.

“I already sent a message to him apologizing and I also do it here publicly. I hope he hasn’t been hurt and that everything is fine.

“I also apologize to my teammates, my club and my fans for leaving them with one less at the end of the game.

“Unfortunately, there is nothing I can do to change what happened, other than to reflect, work and move on.”

Goals from Michael Keane and in-form striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin ensured the spoils were shared at Goodison Park, with Sadio Mane and Mo Salah netting for the visitors.

Liverpool thought they had snatched victory in the dying seconds when Jordan Henderson’s effort looped in, but the goal was disallowed after a lengthy period of VAR assessment.

Mane was adjudged to have been offside during the build-up by the narrowest of margins, meaning both sides were forced to settle for a point.
