The National Population Commission, NPC has announced that they are preparing a comprehensive database of deaths and birth registration in Nigeria from the year 2004 to 2019.
According to the Chairman of the Commission’s Civil Registrations and Vital Statistics (CRVS), Dr. Tayo Olatunji, the database will be ready by the end of this year 2019.
He disclosed this while speaking at the at the opening of a two-day workshop for 2014 and 2015 scanned vital registration forms, held in Kogi’s capital city, Lokoja on Tuesday.
Dr. Olatunji said that the death and birth registrations which were recorded manually are currently being scanned and transferred to an electronic database.
Olatunji, who is a former Director-General of the National Population Commission, NPC said that the statistics of vital registrations from the year 2004 to 2008 have already been scanned and uploaded to the electronic database.
He disclosed that the outstanding statistics from the year 2009 to 2013 before the inception of the electronic database will be scanned and uploaded too as soon as the Federal Government release the fund required for the task.
Olatunji cited that though the task is strenuous and tedious, it has to be done so that the country will be on par with the developed countries.
He cited that the NPC has since stopped the collection of vital registration statistics in the manual and analogue form, and he added that the move to go fully digital will greatly help to change the direction of civil registrations in Nigeria.
