Amidst the news of the tragic building collapse which killed about 20 people and left many others injured in Ita-Faji area of Lagos Island on Wednesday in Lagos State, the Governor of the State, Akinwunmi Ambode has ordered the demolition of about 80 buildings in the area.
After assessing the scene of the unfortunate event on Wednesday, Governor Ambode ordered the demolition of all illegal school buildings and all buildings that are marked as unfit in the area.
Following Governor Ambode’s order, the General Manager of the Lagos State Building Control Agency, Omotayo Fakolujo led officials of the agency to commence demolition of the marked buildings.
Mr. Fakolujo while speaking to newsmen at the demolition scene disclosed that most owners and tenants of the illegal structures have been refusing eviction and rejecting arrests before the governor’s order.
He cited that the demolition of buildings required a lot of legal work and tussle between the government and the owners of the buildings.
“I can say that the owners and tenants are recalcitrant, inasmuch as we try to evict them, they continue to evade arrest and go through the back door and we feel that this structure might go down as soon as possible and that is why we have to bring it down today.
“There is a lot of legal tussles that relate to demolition. For this one, we just had a clearance from the court last week. We are moving to Smith, Palm Church and Adeniji Adele where we have marked over 20 structures for demolition.” He told newsmen while speaking at one of the demolition sites.
