Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has said that his criticism of president Muhammadu Buhari is not borne out of hatred as he alleged that he is a boss to president Buhari.
Chief Olusegun Obasanjo has been known to be a great critic of president Muhammadu Buhari and his administration.
However, speaking during the event of the celebration of his 82nd birthday on Tuesday, at the Obasanjo Presidential Library in Ogun State capital, Abeokuta the former president said that there is nothing personal in his criticisms of Buhari as he is a boss to the current Nigerian president.
“Buhari; there is nothing personal between me and him … I am his boss, with all due respect,” Obasanjo said.
“The point is that I have been in that position longer than any Nigerian will ever be there.”
Former president Obasanjo said that his criticism of the programmes and policies of president Buhari’s administration is to ensure that things were done democratically.
He cited that anybody could be the president and that the aim of criticism is to enhance democracy and ensure the nation’s economic growth and development.
Obasanjo was quoted saying;
“You see that in a democracy, to criticise a policy of the government is not a family affair; even if it is my brother that is there and is not doing the things that I believe he should do, he must be criticised.
“That is what democracy is all about. So, if I say anybody in government in Nigeria or any government in Africa is not doing well, let that government prove that it is doing well; it is not taking things personally,” He said.
Finally, Obasanjo called on African leaders to focus more on democracy, good governance and the growth of the economy for the good of their people.
He added that those who keep quiet in an environment where there is no development are accomplices in the crime.
