Argentina national team and FC Barcelona captain, Lionel Messi picked up a groin injury in the Selección’s friendly match against Venezuela yesterday.
Although he played the full 90 minutes of the game, the Balon D’or winner was unable to impress as the Venezuelans beat them 3:1 at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium in Madrid.
Venezuela took an early lead in the game with a goal from Newcastle FC striker, Solomon Rondon in the 6th minute. Venezuela went on to double their lead in the first half when Jhon Murrilo struck again in 44th minute, making it 2:0 at first half.
Lautaro Martinez pulled one back for Argentina in the 59th minute, before Josef Martinez scored again for Venezuela from the spot in the 76th minute, ending the fixture at 3:1 to ruin Messi’s much anticipated come back to the Argentine National team.
Lionel Messi, who before the game against Venezuela yesterday had not played for Argentina since their chaotic World Cup exit against France in June last year, will reportedly be left out of the squad to face next week.
The Argentine who already has 39 goal in 36 game this season, will be missing in action for his Spanish based club, FC Barcelona as the catalan side fight for another treble this season.
Although Messi’s timeline away has not being confirmed, he is expected to miss Barcelona’s games against Espanyol in La Liga and even their first leg Champions League quarter finals trip to Old Trafford against Manchester United.
