18 dead and many more injured in Lagos building collapse

The top floor of a three storey primary school building collapsed yesterday at Mercy Street, Ita-Faji, Lagos Island area of Lagos state.

According to latest reports, no less than 18 people have been confirmed dead while many more others are injured and currently receiving treatments.

The building, which housed Ohen Private Nursery and Primary School on its third floor, imploded yesterday at about 12:00 pm trapping many pupils and teachers.

Speaking about the incident, the Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Jide Idris, confirmed the casualty figure and disclosed that the injured are currently receiving treatment at Lagos Island General Hospital, Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) and Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), among many other available hospitals. He stated that rescue operations will continue today.

The  Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) General Manager, Adeshina Tiamiyu disclosed that the school building has been marked for demiloiton since 2014.

Speaking to newsmen, an eye witness who gave his name as Abayomi Olaniyan stated that he was among those who started rescue operations before the rescue agencies came. He disclosed that the issue of building collapse is very common in the area.

Olaniyan went further to bewail that most houses in the area are weak and called on the government to do something about them.

He was quoted speaking;

“Something similar happened around here last year. The issue of building collapse is common here and the government must do something about it. Houses will be marked and due for demolition but they will not demolish it; they will renovate it. So many houses here are weak; they are meant to be demolished but they will tell you they are renovating it; they will only paint it.” Olaniyan bewailed.

Another eye witness,  Bola Ogunyemi spoke to newsmen.

“The pupils were already lined up from their third-floor classes when the school owner noticed that the building was cracking. Before the kids could be arranged from their classes, the building had collapsed”. The school owner and some kids have been taken to the hospital.” He said.

Meanwhile, youths in the area are complaining that the rescue efforts are very slow as they call on the agencies to be quicker in other to save more people.
